Mechanical Engineer (Design/Project Level)
The Technology and Breakthrough Innovation team drives the creation of new product solutions by exploiting new technologies to enable innovative product development for the fast-evolving electrical grid. Future electrical grid products and systems must deliver unparalleled user experience, outstanding long-term value, and profitable revenue streams. This role supports the design and development of vacuum interrupter technologies, and the expansion of S&C’s long term capability in this cutting-edge technology.
The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to the following:
Actively collaborate with a team that conceptualizes, designs, prototypes and tests unique interrupters that meet required switchgear specifications and relevant industry standards.
Proposing novel design elements that have the potential for IP protection.
Collaborating with switchgear engineers to trade-off and agree performance attributes at the interfaces between the switchgear and interrupter.
Be responsible for the processing and manufacturing aspects of a product from conceptualization through launch and early production.
Support ongoing production of vacuum interrupters. Work with analytical labs and quality control to prevent and debug production issues.
Representing S&C to customers, suppliers and technology partners to enhance S&C’s reputation for innovation and rigorous design
Representing the development team to internal stakeholders at all levels of the company
Directing investigations to seek root causes for design performance using formal problem-solving techniques.
Designing and testing subsystems within a vacuum interrupter.
Establishing vacuum interrupter requirements and designing test programs to validate the performance of the product.
Pursuing assignments with a “can do” attitude and sense of urgency.

Minimum 5 years of working independently in product development as well contributing to multi-disciplinary new product teams
MS or higher in Engineering Physics, Mechanical Engineering, or Applied Physics with formal training or experience in vacuum systems.
Knowledge of the design or application of vacuum interrupters or electrical contactors a plus, but not a requirement.
Good knowledge of electric and magnetic fields, electrical breakdown in vacuum, and basic understanding of plasma physics.
Proven track record of substantive contributions, both analytical and conceptual, to new product development and successful commercialization.
Strong skills in identifying risks, developing mitigation strategies, alternative solutions, and resolving issues independently and in collaboration with multidisciplinary team
Ability to combine disparate ideas into unique solutions
Strong verbal (presentation) and written (reports) skills
Major plus if you have expertise in vacuum braze joints, materials, and issues that arise from multiple materials being involved in assemblies that traverse hundreds of degrees Celsius.
Expertise in at least some of the following: stainless steels, alumina based ceramics, oxygen free copper and related alloys and how they are cleaned, processed & used in vacuum furnaces.
Experience with corrosion of steel & copper alloys a plus.
