Associate Vice President for the Office of Institutional Equity

The newly established Office of Institutional Equity seeks a transformational leader to serve as its next Associate Vice President (AVP) to engage The Ohio State University community in elevating the equitable treatment of all students, faculty, staff, and visitors on all campuses. The Ohio State University strives to be a model for higher education in the advancement of equity and inclusion and the successful AVP will be an innovative thinker who can integrate the strategic initiatives of the Office across the University. Reporting to the Executive Vice President and Provost, the AVP will build coordinated response efforts for all stakeholders in multiple areas including but not limited to the Office of Academic Affairs, Human Resources, the Office of Student Life, the Department of Athletics, and the Office of University Compliance.

Office of Institutional Equity Actions include:

• Engage in proactive work to further the goals of the Office, such as creating and revising applicable policies, developing community expectations and providing education/prevention.

• Consult on specific concerns and matters at the university, including all campuses, all 88 county extension operations, and the Medical Center.

• Conduct site visits and provide audit support to ensure compliance with university, local, state, and federal expectations.

• Coordinate a response to all reports of discrimination, harassment, and sexual misconduct.

• Provide information on support resources, assist with supportive measures, and provide information about investigation and resolution options.

• Conduct investigations and adjudicate complaints of discrimination, harassment, and sexual misconduct involving students, faculty, staff, student employees, graduate associates, suppliers/contractors, program participants, volunteers, visitors, and employee applicants as appropriate.

Candidate Qualifications

Education
A J.D. or a master’s degree in a relevant field is required; a doctoral degree or other terminal degree in a relevant field is preferred.

Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Minimum of 10 years of direct leadership and management experience in a legal or regulatory environment.

• Experience in or with an academic institution.

• Demonstrated experience and success in interacting with high level executives and Boards of Trustees.

• Verifiable track record establishing, cultivating, and growing strong relationships up, down, across and outside the organization; expert-level problem solving and proven ability to interpret analytical information, develop and drive outcomes and clearly communicate data driven decisions.

• Experience/expertise in creating a culture of compliance.

• Demonstrated effectiveness in identifying and developing key talent to serve on initiatives, programs, and projects.

• Demonstrated experience in working with sensitive information and ability to maintain confidentiality.

• Knowledge of assessment tools and practices used to evaluate campus climate and the ability to use the data generated from those tools and practices to identify potential issues.

• The highest level of personal integrity and ethics.

• Demonstrated strong collaboration with internal departments and external colleagues, with the ability to understand the importance of interconnectedness, creating strong relationships, and building a coordinated response for all stakeholders.

• Demonstrated leadership, organizational, planning, and management skills along with experience supervising cross-functional teams in a complex and collaborative environment.

• Deep knowledge of and ability to interpret nondiscrimination laws and legal guidance related to those laws.

• Exceptional interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively and interact effectively with key stakeholders such as students, faculty, staff, and community and governmental agencies.

• Demonstrated commitment to diversity and ability to uphold the universities policies around a diverse workforce.

• Experience and comfort with managing and resolving conflict, and the courage and integrity to pursue action consistent with the goals of civil rights law and university policy.

• Outstanding written and verbal communication skills.

• Strong presentation and facilitation skills with an emphasis on education and training for a variety of constituencies.

• Strong analytical and critical thinking skills coupled with intellectual curiosity.
