Posted By: Reginald Culpepper on May 31, 2023 Harris-Stowe State University’s (HSSU) assistant professor of Biological Sciences Dr. Carmel Martin-Fairey has been chosen as an inaugural Taylor Geospatial Institute (TGI) Fellow. "I am thankful and grateful for the opportunity to represent Harris-Stowe as a fellow for TGI,” Dr. Martin-Fairey said. “I hope to bring the map to all of our Black and Brown moms and babies, as my contribution to the geospatial science efforts." The program recognizes rising stars and internationally renowned scientists who demonstrated unwavering commitment to advancing TGI’s mission of advancing geospatial sciences and visionary leaders who pioneer innovative solutions to revolutionize industries and inform policy decisions to create a better future. Vice President of STEM Initiatives Dr. Freddie Wills, Jr. spoke on the importance of this appointment for Dr. Martin-Fairey and the university. “Having an HSSU faculty be included in the inaugural Taylor Geospatial Institute (TGI) Faculty Fellow cohort is a monumental victory for the University and our esteemed faculty, Dr. Carmel Martin-Fairey,” Dr. Wills said. “TGI is vastly building a world-class interdisciplinary research institute, consisting of faculty from across the St. Louis region who are engaged in studies that use emerging technology in geospatial science to bring solutions to grand challenges facing society today and beyond. Dr. Martin Fairey’s inclusion in this honorable group of faculty is wonderful for the University, and it is yet another step towards building Harris-Stowe State University as the premiere HBCU for all things geospatial science.” The fellowship program allows institutions who are a part of TGI to recruit and retain distinguished researchers in geospatial science fields, develop the next generation of scientific leaders and catalyze collaboration to accelerate the St. Louis region’s development as a global geospatial center of excellence. “We are excited about the inaugural class of TGI Fellows,” Taylor Geospatial Institute acting director and associate professor of geospatial science at Saint Louis University Ph.D., said. “TGI Fellows play a critical role in establishing the bridges between TGI and its global partners. They serve as guiding beacons in pursuit of new knowledge, inspiring others by fostering a legacy of scientific excellence that propels TGI’s mission, and leading others to advance innovation, transforming ideas into practice that shape our future that heavily relies on the development of geospatial technologies.” TGI Fellows Fellows are appointed for a period of three years and each fellow can be reappointed for a second term. They are expected to grow as researchers by participating in collaborative grant development workshops, presenting their work at TGI events and collaborating on geospatial research. The fellows may be allocated discretionary funding to help support research, a TGI post-doc, individualized access to data analytics and computing resources and grant proposal development support. The TGI consortium includes Saint Louis University, the Donald Danforth Plant Science Center, Harris-Stowe State University, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, Missouri University of Science & Technology, University of Missouri-Columbia, University of Missouri-St. Louis, and Washington University in St. Louis. Collectively, these institutions encompass more than 5,000 faculty and 100,000 students.
