What To Expect When Training To Be a Medical Assistant

Coursework OverviewA typical medical assistant program consists of both classroom learning and hands-on experience in clinical settings. The coursework typically includes instruction in anatomy and physiology, pathology, pharmacology, medical terminology, and other related topics. Depending on the program you choose, you may also learn about nutrition, first aid and CPR, blood-borne pathogens safety protocols, insurance billing procedures, health care law and ethics, computer skills for health care professionals—the list goes on! Training RequirementsBecoming a medical assistant typically requires some form of post-secondary education, which could include a certificate, diploma, or associate’s degree program. An accredited program will typically take about one year or less, depending on the type of program you choose. During your training, you will learn how to perform basic clinical duties such as taking vital signs and performing other patient assessments, as well as administrative tasks like scheduling appointments and managing patient records. You may also be trained in coding and billing procedures. After completing your medical assistant programs, most states require that you pass an exam administered by the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA) in order to become certified as a medical assistant. This exam is designed to test your knowledge and skills in areas such as anatomy and physiology, pharmacology and medicine administration, laboratory procedures, medical law, and ethics, among other topics related to medical assisting. Once you have passed this exam, you can apply for state certification or registration with the AAMA. On-the-Job ResponsibilitiesMedical assistants work alongside physicians in both clinical and administrative settings. Their duties vary significantly depending on their employer's needs but generally include tasks such as taking patient histories; recording vital signs; performing routine lab tests; preparing patients for examination; administering injections; giving medications; instructing patients on medications or treatments; maintaining equipment; updating patient records; scheduling appointments; handling billing procedures; answering phones; filing insurance forms and other documents related to patient care.
