Interstate Moving and What You Should Be Prepared For

Interstate Moving and What You Should Be Prepared For
Posted By: Kara Masterson on December 09, 2022

If you’re planning on moving to a new state, whether that be for school, a job, or some other step in the next stage of your life, you should know some of the key facts about interstate moving so that you can better prepare yourself to relocate. While there’s likely not much difference between moving to a new town and moving to a new state, there are a few key differences you should be aware of and some extra precautions you should take for such a long-distance move. By knowing what to expect, you will likely handle the changes and the moving process much easier, as a result managing certain challenges without feeling like you're in over your head.

Additional Preparation Time

You’ll need to devote more time to an interstate move than you would if you were only moving to a nearby neighborhood or another part of your state that’s within a short distance. You may need to start planning your move a few weeks or even months in advance, and it’s usually best to prepare to relocate at least one month before the move. That way you have time to allocate what goes where, what you might have to leave behind, and how you’re going to get it there (such as hiring a moving truck, packing everything into your car or a couple of cars, or if you’re going to try shipping certain items; also how many trips it might take to get everything moved and if you’re willing to go back and forth such a long distance).

Being Extra Cautious of Tracking Your Items

Many of your household possessions are likelier to get misplaced when you’re moving out of state, so you’ll want to be extra diligent about keeping track of these items.

All boxes should be labeled clearly with the items inside them, and you might even consider putting your name and new address on each box so that the movers can keep track of them better. There are also apps that can be downloaded to make tracking your items easier. It’s further imperative to take all copies of important documents and keep the originals and copies on you without packing them for the movers to take.

Getting the Right Moving Truck Size

You don’t want to get a moving truck that’s too small to fit your belongings, but you also shouldn’t get one that’s too large and costs you more money than you need to spend. Your moving company, someone like Helping Hands Express Moving & Storage, will likely recommend a truck size depending on your current home size and how many rooms have items that need to be packed and transported. Multiple moving trucks can also be sent to transport your items if needed.

Learning What You Can Bring

Not all items are legal in all states, and you may need to get rid of certain possessions before you move if you want to avoid possible trouble with the law. Certain plants and cannabis products usually can’t be brought across state lines. Your new state may also prohibit fruits and vegetables from being brought from your current state. Some household cleaners, chemicals, and fertilizers also shouldn’t be brought. If you plan to transport any firearms, you’ll definitely want to learn your new state’s gun laws.

In conclusion, interstate moving can be a daunting process for those who are unprepared. Taking the time to plan in advance and being aware of the potential complications that may arise during your move can help ensure that the entire relocation goes as smoothly as possible. By following these guidelines and being mindful of regulations related to items you may transport, you will have a much easier and more pleasant experience during your move.
