Tips for Figuring Out the Degree That's Right For You

Tips for Figuring Out the Degree That
Posted By: Kara Masterson on September 13, 2022

If you've decided to continue your education, you've made a great decision. Workers with education beyond a high school diploma earn more than those without it. Of course, choosing to pursue a degree of some type is just the beginning. The big question is what field of study you should choose. Here are a few factors to consider as you evaluate your options.

Aptitude

Most people have taken a college aptitude test at some point. These do a good job of determining what you're best suited for and what subjects you likely excel at. The more naturally the subject matter comes to you, the easier you'll find your coursework. In the intensive work associated with completing of a masters degree or other advanced educational pursuits, your ability to understand the material is key. An aptitude test can help you decide which degrees might be worth pursuing if you don’t have an idea of one already.

Aspirations

We all have different reasons for pursuing a degree. It could be for a better job, better pay at a current job, or just for the pride of seeing it through. Whatever your motivation, make sure you understand what it is and what that means for your choice of program.

If it's a raise or a promotion you're after, research what degrees are held by others at that level so that you can target your studies.

Interests

Nobody wants to sit through boring classes, but at a good school, there are few classes that everyone finds boring. It just makes sense that if you found a topic interesting before you started your classes, you will find it interesting once you enroll. When you really enjoy the subject matter of a class, you will be more engaged and more successful in your studies. This will make you a more successful student - and a less bored one!

Marketability

Here's where we'll wrap it up. If you're good at a subject, have a plan for how to use the knowledge, and find the topic interesting, you're just one step away from nailing down your plan. That last step is the marketability of your degree. Of course, some people just want a degree to say that they have one, but if you've got career-centered purposes for choosing your field of study, you must choose one that can help you get that job or promotion.

Whether your degree takes a little while to finish or a few years, you'll still get that same satisfaction from hanging a diploma on your wall. Choose a program that will make the process and the outcome satisfying for you.
