Careers to Consider if You're Good With Your Hands

Careers to Consider if You
Posted By: Anica Oaks on January 31, 2022

If you’re good with your hands, your career options are practically limitless. There are thousands of different jobs that require expertise in areas like construction, engineering, and computer programming that all rely on knowledge of how things work and how to fix them when they’re broken. Read on to learn about four careers that are perfect for people that work with their hands:

Mechanic

If you're good with your hands, you might want to consider becoming a mechanic. You could work on cars, airplanes, tractors, or anything else that runs on an engine. Mechanics are often self-employed or own their own shop. They make their living by charging customers for repairs, so you'll need to buy some equipment and be able to offer competitive rates to get started.

All mechanics will need licenses from governing bodies like state departments of transportation (DOTs). Most jurisdictions have extensive lists of requirements to acquire these licenses, but no matter where you plan on going into business, study up on local rules before opening your doors.

Electrician

Electricians work on commercial and residential electrical wiring systems, including testing and troubleshooting. A job as an electrician requires a high school diploma or equivalent, though some states require an apprenticeship program.

Electricians must hold licenses or permits in some jurisdictions, as well as business insurance. Average salaries range from $52,000 to $57,000 annually. Job opportunities are projected to grow 4% through 2022.

Contractor

Whether you specialize in construction jobs, carpentry, plumbing, or electrical work, contractors are often self-employed and can set their own schedules. Contractors can charge hourly or flat rates, earn referral fees from bringing on new clients and enjoy bonuses for completing projects on time. Since a contractor is responsible for the entire business (not an employee of someone else’s), it can be easier to start one than some other careers.

Plumber

People are going to have problems with their pipes no matter what; might as well get paid to fix them. Being a plumber does more than just land you in someone’s good graces. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that plumbers earn a median annual wage of $52,400—plenty more than average. Additionally, there’s job security: The BLS also reported that employment was expected to grow 12 percent between 2012 and 2022, much faster than average.

There are many different careers that you can choose to pursue, but it’s important to look at your natural talents and passions before deciding which career path will work best for you. Keep these jobs in mind as you learn more about what next step to take.
