Khyrssnee Madison was speechless, reduced to a smile so bright and wide it threatened to swallow her face.


The Bosse High School[1] senior had just been asked what it was like to lead her team to a 3-0 start in the volleyball standings of the Southern Indiana Athletic Conference after a 3-1 win at Harrison Thursday night and she couldn't speak.


"Well," she said as she held up a finger for more time, "it feels surreal. It's not expected."

Bosse (14-5, 3-0 SIAC and 2-0 City) is breaking through on the volleyball court for the first time in awhile. How long? Even the people at the school weren't sure.


"The girls went around the school looking for volleyball pictures and the latest ones they found were from the 1980s," said coach Rachel Ferguson, who is enjoying her best season in her seventh year as coach.



"Over the last 10 days everything's gone our way."


The Bulldogs looked dominant early behind the lanky Madison, her lankier freshman sister, Kennedy, fellow freshman Yamani Hunter and senior Jamie Gostley, who all had a big hand in two 25-14 wins.


Then Harrison (3-8) pushed back behind sophomore Jazmyne Johnson and junior Andrea Chessor to win the third game 25-20, before Bosse came back late in the fourth game to close out the match 25-22.


"We definitely missed a lot of serves in the third game and I think it got to us a little mentally," said Ferguson. "We've got to learn to fight through adversity and we did that at the end of the fourth game."


With Bosse trailing 19-18 in the fourth game, Khyrssnee Madison ended a long rally with a **** to put the serve in her own hands. Then she pushed the Bulldogs to five straight points that included two kills by Gostley and one by Hunter.


After Harrison fought back with three straight points, Hunter scored a **** from middle hitter to end the match.


"We had to get excited about playing our East Side rival so we would compete," said Harrison coach Julie Sellers. "But Bosse has a really nice team. They've got a bunch of good hitters and they all play scrappy defense." The Bulldogs' defense was led by senior libero Jennifer Swedenberg with 21 digs and the passing game by another senior, Brittanie Oliver, with 30 assists, including the match-clinching feed to Hunter.


The middle, though, was controlled by Khyrssnee Madison with 15 kills and four blocks. She also tied her sister, Kennedy, for the match lead in service aces with five.


"The transition of this team from freshman year till now has been tremendous," said Khyrssnee Madison. "We've had to work really hard because Bosse has always been an underdog.


"But it's paid off. We hadn't beat Memorial in like 20 years or Castle since I've been here and we got both those this year. Now we want to keep this going in the City and the conference. It's been a lot of fun."
