AAMU Will Miss Its “Detroit Lion”

AAMU Will Miss Its “Detroit Lion”
Posted By: Jehan Bunch on February 03, 2010

Huntsville, Ala. ---- Although small in stature, Dr. Tessie D. Bush of Detroit, Mich., was a ferocious defender of Alabama A&M University and tirelessly encouraged her fellow alumni to step up their support for “the greatest school on earth.” She was the fiesty founder of AAMU’s Detroit Renaissance Alumni Chapter, as well as its Michigan Alumni Chapter.

Funeral services for the 90-year-old retired educator of 50 years have not been finalized but are being coordinated by Swanson Funeral Home at 14751 West McNichols Road in Detroit.

“The real role of alumni,” said Bush during an interview for AAMU’s Campus Intercom magazine in 2008, “is to mentor students, give back and support the president 100 percent as he or she goes about a very difficult job.”

Bush taught for some five decades in elementary and secondary schools in Sylacauga and Tuscaloosa, Ala.

, and Detroit, Mich. Her efforts earned her recognition as a high ranking and well-respected educator by her fellow professionals, top administrators, and by students throughout the state of Michigan for having raised standards and realized outcomes in student performance—always emphasizing excellence.

After graduating from Parker High School in her native Birmingham, Ala., Bush earned the undergraduate degree from AAMU in 1943, before receiving the Master of Education degree from Wayne State University.

Her honors from AAMU, the Detroit Public School System, the City of Detroit, the community, church and other organizations are legion, but all culminated with her acceptance of an honorary doctorate from her Alma Mater at a commencement ceremony in Huntsville, Ala.

She was the proud parent of three children, including two AAMU graduates, and one granddaughter.
