Reports To : Assistant Superintendent, Office of Opportunity Gaps

OFFICE OF OPPORTUNITY GAPS OVERVIEW:
Boston Public Schools Division of Equity, Strategy, and Opportunity Gaps (ESOG) is comprised of four different offices (Equity; Opportunity Gaps; Recruitment, Cultivation and Diversity; and, Strategy and Innovation). The Office of Opportunity Gaps (OOG) has built a nationally-recognized model for applying a racial equity and intersectional lens to all aspects of their work through groundbreaking strategies, including the development and/or implementation of the Opportunity and Achievement Gaps Policy; professional development in Culturally and Linguistically Sustaining Practices (CLSP), the BPS Racial Equity Planning Tool, Early Warning Indicator Systems as well as other important resources. The office has also incubated and developed student-facing innovative programming models such as Excellence For All, 10 Boys/10 Girls, Exam School Initiative (ESI), Building Assets Reducing Risks (BARR), and other programming aimed to advance student learning. The Office Opportunity Gaps collaborates closely with the Opportunity and Achievement Gaps Task Force, a body appointed by the Boston School Committee; to develop cultural and linguistic competence district-wide; assure consistent rigorous academic expectations; promote maximum access for all students to cognitively demanding educational opportunities; and, build partnerships with families, students and community groups that inform and further the goal of eliminating opportunity gaps.

OVERVIEW:
We are looking for a Data Scientist to analyze large amounts of raw information to find patterns and insights that will help the Office of Opportunity Gaps and Boston Public Schools develop explicit strategies for closing academic and opportunity gaps for our most marginalized students and families.

In this role, you should hold a range of analytical and statistical skills with an appreciation for machine learning. Critical thinking and problem-solving skills are essential for interpreting school-related data. An appreciation of the importance of quantitative, qualitative, and mixed-methods methodology is critical for understanding and responding to challenges related to eliminating achievement gaps.
SKILL AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Identify valuable data sources and automate data collection processes
  • Undertake pre-processing of structured and unstructured data ( Data cleansing )
  • Analyze large amounts of information to discover trends and patterns around student performance and social emotional well-being
  • Assist in building predictive models and machine-learning algorithms related to reducing or eliminating opportunity and academic achievement gaps by race, ethnicity, and other groupings
  • Present information using data visualization tools and techniques
  • Assist in proposing challenges, strategies, and solutions that close opportunity and achievement gaps
  • Collaborate with other BPS departments in designing and building technology tools that close opportunity and achievement gaps

PROGRAM SUPPORT AND ADMINISTRATION
  • Provide data analytics for systemic and targeted program strategies
  • Draft and communicate monthly reports to the Assistant Superintendent for the Office of Opportunity Gaps, Chief of Equity, Strategy, and Opportunity Gaps, and the Opportunity and Achievement Gaps Task Force regarding student data trends and support with predictive strategies for closing achievement gaps
  • Develop and maintain tracking systems (i.e. Dashboards) for programming implementation and accountability progress around the Opportunity and Achievement Gap Policy and District's Strategic Plan
  • Perform all other related duties as assigned

Qualifications - Required:
  • BSc/BA in Computer Science. Engineering or relevant field required
  • Track record in working in data science situations, including data mining
  • Experience using business intelligence tools (e.g. Tableau) and data frameworks (e.g. Hadoop)
  • Analytical mind and educational and/or business acumen
  • Strong math skills in the areas of descriptive and inferential statistics (e.g. statistics, algebra)
  • Problem-solving aptitude
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills
  • A strong appreciation of the critical importance of enhancing racial and ethnic diversity in work related to academic achievement in public education

Qualifications - Preferred:
  • Graduate degree in Data Science or other quantitative field is preferred
  • Knowledge and comfortability in working with computer programming languages such as R , Python , SQL , and Python ; also Java or C++
TERMS : Managerial, B21. 12 months.
